We often have questions from people wondering does hypnosis work for hair pulling. We firmly believe that hypnosis has a role in hair pulling treatments. But how does hypnotherapy work for hair pulling?

Habits and compulsions like hair pulling tend to become automated behaviors where you consciously switch off to varying degrees and go into a kind of trance or daydream.  The habit becomes a deeply ingrained in the subconscious, it becomes automatic.   This is why it can be so difficult to overcome a hair pulling habit or compulsion through conscious effort and willpower alone, because it is automated in the subconscious.  With hypnosis you go into a trance state, just like daydreaming and you usually become very deeply relaxed.  The subconscious mind is very receptive to new ideas and information when in this relaxed state, so suggestions can be presented to the subconscious that encourage change, that stop the hair pulling actions, habits and thoughts you want to be free from.  New ideas can be suggested to replace old habits of hair and eyelash pulling with new positive ones.  Change begins to happen, sometimes very quickly and easily.  Through repeated use of hypnosis for hair pulling you can bring about a lasting change.  With hypnotherapy it is always important to consciously want to achieve the goal you have in mind, so focussing on the benefits of this change consciously can help a great deal too.
I developed my self-hypnosis for hair pullers from my experience in helping suffers in one to one hypnotherapy sessions in my Clinical Hypnotherapy Practice.  I found that most hair pullers needed several sessions, partly because they had been doing it for so long it had become part of their identity.  Integrating that part of them, accepting it and controlling it formed the basis of treatment.  I found that my clients benefited greatly from the repetition they gained from hypnosis, as well as the techniques that are designed to overcome and conquer this distressing problem. 
I saw people transformed over a relatively short period of time, but the wisest were never complacent, always aware that they are an ex-puller and therefore potentially vulnerable to relapses at times of stress. Knowing yourself and knowing your weaknesses puts you in the position of power, so you recognise when you need to take a step back.  Conscious awareness through understanding the condition and your triggers, and subconscious change through self-hypnosis, I believe that these approaches combined will work for most trichotillomania sufferers.
