As an adult, I am particularly concerned about trichotillomania in children and children pulling out eyelashes or hair. I specifically remember pulling out my own eyelashes as a young child. I would save the eyelashes in a box, and later I began eating the eyelashes. I had no idea that anything was strange about a kid pulling out eyelashes. And I didn’t find out until much later in life that I actually had a legitimate disorder. If only I had know sooner. If only an adult had helped me understand and treat my hair and eyelash pulling disorder.

‘Hey, why is this kid pulling out eyelashes?

The most amazing thing to me is that no one even noticed, no one said, ‘Hey, why doesn’t this child have eyelashes? Why is this kid pulling out eyelashes?’ And that is a wake up call to me now, as adults, whether parents, family, friends, teachers or other significant grown-up, that we must:

  • be vigilant to the small, easily undetected signs that something might not be quite right. That maybe there is a child pulling hair out, or pulling eyelashes out
  • understand pulling eyelashes out in children and how to explain hair pulling to children, knowing how others feel and why a child pulls hair and eyelashes out
  • know about trichotillomania child treatments, what we can try and what works best

Hair pulling in children

Once a child is pulling hair out, neural connections are being built in their brain that reinforce the hair pulling behavior, which makes it more difficult with each passing day for the child to control their hair and eyelash pulling. As they become an adult they will continually suffer from this condition. So early detection and help is very important.

A trichotillomania child treatment

Even more of a reason for us to spend time, money and research to find a trichotillomania child treatment. Knowing how unaware I was until relatively late in life, and all of the years I suffered from hair and eyelash pulling, educating individuals and families about this legitimate disorder is now why it is important to me to get knowledge and a system to treat hair and eyelash pulling in children into the hands of more Trich sufferers. And not only the hands of children pulling hair out, but the families and friends of these hair pullers.

How to stop a child pulling hair out

trichotillomania in childrenIn the Trich Stop community, we get a lot of emails, requests and thoughts from the parents and families of young hair pullers and children that pull eyelashes and hair, asking how to stop a child pulling hair out. Because of the nature of trichotillomania, and there being much shame mixed up in the compulsive disorder of pulling out your own hair or eyelashes, there is not a lot of knowledge about this body focused repetitive behavior. Even if at times it is shown in films like ‘Young Adult’, it is still not openly discussed, even though hair pulling affects approximately 2-5% of the population and often begins as trichotillomania in children. So understanding, and being able to explain to a child pulling hair out, and understanding what a trichotillomania child treatment may look like, is the essential first step to helping a child stop pulling hair out.

The happy thing for me is that the Trich Stop System does indeed help these young people. It is a positive, upbeat method to help both young people and adults understand how to stop children pulling hair out. The materials and methods are easy to use and easy to understand, and with many examples that young people can relate to, and the hair growth products are all natural. Whether for hair or eyelash trichotillomania, or both.

But the real thing that is helping them is the underlying support from their caring family and friends. SO, bravo to you if you are reading this in an attempt to find a solution for a family member. We encourage you to keep supporting them, to not judge, point fingers or tell them ‘just to stop’ and to look for structured help, whether it be counseling, a structured system like the Trich Stop System, or even better a combination of both.
